Wonderpark,
2002, video, 7 min.
In Wonderpark I wander through the complex and indefinable
space of an urban park videotaping strangers: men that mysteriously
appear and disappear behind the shrubbery and trees.
In this work, which is the product of a process repeated over
a long period of time, I wanted to reverse established roles
by turning myself into a voyeur preying on the voyeur. The
aim was to assign the notion of threat toward the opposite
sex a new quality; to arrive at a kind of personal vindication
in the face of a primordial fear that is rooted both in theory
and practice.
However, the effort to reveal the face of the “unknown
dangerous man” eventually led to my identifying with
the object of my observations and to my becoming aware of
a profound, inhumane loneliness.
